Walt Gonske: Painter of Light & Glory
/Many artists practice for a lifetime in hopes of painting with a fraction of the confidence and command of Walt Gonske. He strips away extraneous detail to allow the spirit of his subject to shine through; less a way of painting than a way of seeing. Under Walt’s masterful hand, the world feels grander and more elegant, yet somehow closer at hand.
As a young artist, Walt explored a variety of artistic pursuits before ultimately finding inspiration in Taos. There, he built his career and creative identity, and in the process, he also reignited the city’s fine art scene. In many ways, the small mountain town and the artist grew together, redefining and elevating one another.
What truly connects Walt to the essence of the Southwest—and any locale that graces his canvas—is the authenticity of his approach. With a disciplined work ethic, Walt ventures out in his famous mobile studio to select new sources of inspiration. So many years behind the easel have taught him the importance of painting earnestly and without judgment, seeking to capture the sincerity of the moment rather than laboring for perfection.
This August, the gallery will host Walt’s upcoming exhibition: Light & Glory. In the spotlight is the artist’s Church Series—an extensive array of paintings spanning his half-century career, including classic Southwestern scenes and pieces completed abroad. Each one is a jaw-dropping reminder of both Walt’s skill and his ever-fresh perspective.
This exhibition reaffirms Walt’s deep connection to his home here in New Mexico—and why he’s cemented his legacy in the art world writ large.
Walt Gonske: Light and Glory opens Saturday, August 7, 2026 at Nedra Matteucci Galleries and will run through September 5, 2026.
